Pickleball has taken off across Singapore, and getting started is easier than most people expect. Whether you want a relaxed social hobby or a sport you can take seriously, here's a simple roadmap for learning pickleball the right way.
Step 1: Decide how you want to learn
There are three common routes, and many players mix them:
- Private coaching — one-to-one attention and the fastest progress. Ideal if you want to improve quickly or fix a specific weakness.
- Group or social classes — affordable, fun and a great way to meet other players while you learn.
- Casual social play — a friendly, low-pressure way to build match experience once you know the basics.
If you're brand new, starting with a coached lesson or class is the smart move — you'll learn correct technique and the rules from day one instead of picking up habits that are hard to shake later.
Step 2: Learn the essentials
Your early sessions will cover the grip and ready position, the serve and return, the all-important "dink," and the simple rules that shape the game — including the no-volley "kitchen" zone. None of it is complicated, and a good coach has you rallying and playing points within your first session.
Step 3: Find coaching near you
MGM Pickleball Academy coaches islandwide across Singapore — spanning the north, south, east, west and central regions — so you can learn close to home or work. See our full locations, and if your area isn't listed, just ask; we cover many neighbourhoods on request.
Step 4: Keep improving
Once you're comfortable, the way to level up is regular play plus targeted coaching. Group sessions keep you active and social; the occasional private lesson sharpens specific shots. Before long you'll be ready for competitive or ladder play if that's your goal.
